The iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak Will Contain An iBooks DRM Patch Thanks To Planetbeing

When the iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak was released there was numerous errors while opening DRM (digital rights management) encrypted iBooks on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. These errors effected the way images and content showed up, and in some cases made certain iBooks illegible. It was only until the hacker @Planetbeing released a patch to fix the problem that Jailbroken users on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware were able to once again use iBooks reliably.

iBooks DRM

With the iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak just around the corner an obvious concern is that iBooks will once again not function reliably due to conflicting errors with DRM. Luckily for our sakes however, hacker Pod2G has recently tweeted that Planetbeing has worked his ‘crazeless’ binary to fix issues with his Jailbreak and DRMd iBooks. Meaning that straight off the bat when the iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak is released it will be fully compatible with all iBooks.

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak iBooks DRMFor all of you Jailbreakers who make use of iBooks frequently I am sure this comes as a big relief! As instead of having to wait for a patch to be developer after-the-fact, thanks to Planetbeing everything should be fully functional from the get go.

We will keep you updated when more information becomes available on the iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak. Until that time please stay tuned and leave any further thoughts or questions in the comments section below.

Switchy Expands On The iPhone’s App Switcher, Literally [Cydia Tweak]

Pick up your iPhone and tap the home button twice. If you’re running iOS 4.0 and up then your app switcher should have popped up (unless you did something funky with Activator). Apple’s stock app switcher is a handy shortcut for jumping between apps and playing music, but by default it’s kind of awkward and underwhelming: you have to close apps one at a time, there’s no album artwork – just the icon for whatever app your iPhone is drawing audio from, and the music navigation buttons are on a different panel than the volume control. Switchy is a tweak which changes that.

Switchy Cydia Tweak

Switchy's double-row of app shortcuts

The most obvious change in Switchy is that it makes the app switcher bigger. Not only does it have space for an extra row of tiles, it also brings the page indicator lights to the bar making it two and a half times bigger. Switchy puts all the music controls on one page, and includes a brightness slider as well as a button for clearing apps from the background.

Extend iOS App Switcher With Switchy

Settings, Brightness, and Clear Apps

Switchy is available in Cydia under the BigBoss repository for .00, and warns that it is not compatible with the iPad.

There are other apps which offer some of Switchy’s functionality. SBSettings (FREE) has a downloadable toggle called Remove Background, which will end all backgrounding tasks and remove them from th task switcher. Music Control Pro adds an Activator enabled control bar which includes album art, forward/backwards buttons, and volume on the same pane and can be set to activate alongside the app switcher (Music Control Pro costs .99, but offers a ridiculous number of other features like video app backgrounding, notification center plugins, and bluetooth control). That said, they don’t make use of the app switcher bar itself, like Switchy does.

BigBoss Switchy

Switchy's music controls are on a single pane

What’s the verdict? Is Switchy the app you’re looking for? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Aaron Sorkin Will Be Writing The Screenplay For Sony’s Steve Jobs Biopic

A couple of days ago we shared with you images of Ashton Kutcher walking to the set for “Jobs: Get Inspired” in full character. While the unofficial Steve Jobs biopic, directed by Joshua Michael Stern, will start to be filmed this month, Sony’s Steve Jobs biopic based off Walter Isaacson’s biography has just found a screenwriter. 9to5Mac reports that Sony has hired the Academy and Emmy award winning screenwriter and producer Aaron Sorkin to write the screenplay for “Steve Jobs: The Movie.”

Aaron Sorkin

Considering how well of a job Sorkin did with “The Social Network,” it gives me high hopes for Sony’s version of the Steve Jobs biopic. It is my only wish that Sorkin does not change the history of Jobs’ life just for entertainment, as he did with “The Social Network.”

This is what Sony had to say about hiring Aaron Sorkin:

Steve Jobs’ story is unique: He was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time, but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.

Do you think having Sorkin right the screenplay for “Steve Jobs: The Movie” was a good idea? Share your responses and further thoughts in the comments section below…

Hacker i0n1c Interviewed: Talks About iOS Hacking, Piracy And Much More!

The Italian iOS blog iSpazio has recently had a chance to sit down and interview the well known hacker i0n1c (Stefan Esser). For those of you who have not heard of i0n1c before, he was responsible for an iOS 4.3.x Untethered Jailbreak. Recently he has also Jailbroken the iOS 5.1 and iOS 5.1.1 firmware Untethered, but will not be releasing anything to the public.

i0n1c interview

In this interview with i0n1c numerous things are discussed like his passion for hacking, Jailbreaking in general, iOS piracy issues and so much more. If you have some time, reading through the entire interview is definitely recommend! i0n1c makes some very true statements about the culture of the Jailbreaking community and in some cases makes some very eye opening statements.

How did you acquire this passion for technology and when you started to hack something?

I had my computer when I was about eight years and I broke up a week later as I was about tweaking some settings that I should not change. My parents did not want to lose time in games, so instead I learned to program and I was very interested in working on low-level things. But I think I was sixteen when I started to realize how many beautiful things can be achieved by modifying the code of other people. I think I could inserirmi earlier in the game, but I never had any kind of Internet access and / or e-mail up to seventeen / eighteen years’.

For most of our users, you’re famous thanks to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.3.X and recently the technique has not been issued to jailbreak iPhone OS 5.1 and 5.1.1: how to address the issue of security of IOS?

Addressing the safety of IOS is how to deal with any matter of safety, with the difference that is much more challenging the safety or PHP web application that was my previous field of research. The other difference is that hacking the iPhone and search for materials for the jailbreak gets you in touch with the actual consumer, directly benefiting your business and this is very different from other fields safely. Most of the time you’re dealing only with applications developers do not like to see problems in their code, or administrators who need to upgrade to the latest version of a piece of software. I assume that there are many fields in the internal security of the consumer actually ever heard the name or nickname of a person involved in finding vulnerabilities or exploits that have written the same. Having done both experiences, I would prefer a developer angry that a “jailbreaker” angry.

We heard that you release the jailbreak iPhone OS 5.1 and iPhone OS 5.1.1 because, for many users, jailbreak means piracy: is there a way to lock it?

Whatever you have heard about why I’m releasing the jailbreak is very probably wrong. The “jailbreak community” tends to take random tweet and spread rumors and conspiracy theories around these. For example, I get a huge number of requests via email or twitter every day from people willing to pay to get the jailbreak because they heard that I sell. I never said I’d sold my jailbreak, I have only discussed the fact that, while developers do all the work for free there are a lot ‘of people who collect a lot of money with every new jailbreak:

  • The programmers who create programs for Cydia;
  • The editors of the jailbreak guides and sites of IOS (including advertising);
  • Those who do pay to make a jailbreak (theoretically free), or use the public exploits for malicious purposes, or conduct studies of devices jailbrekkati and then sell the data in their analyzes and, ultimately, people who use the ‘ bootrom exploit to create expensive software for government agencies.
I may have forgotten others who earn the jailbreak, but I think he made the idea. The people in the “jailbreak community” does not seem to understand that from my point of view, to spend months of work to perfect a jailbreak and then release it for free is a waste of time. And of course they get upset when I say this because they fear that pod2g to persuade him to use his time to something more important.

Speaking of piracy. I’m pretty sure it would be possible to make a jailbreak which would block the most common ways to install pirated applications on devices. But there is no way to prevent the pirates to prevent them from doing the reverse of the jailbreak and change: it may take him a little ‘, because all the jailbreak iPhone OS require low-level code in the kernel that can do all the dirty tricks but eventually find the way. Maybe not fast enough until Apple does not close the vulnerabilities and “kill” actually jailbreak. The game would not be worth the candle. Why should someone like pod2g MuscleNerd or spend days or weeks to write code like that, knowing it would last only a few days.

If users do today jailbreak only for purposes related to piracy, do you think there are still some who do it to have complete control of your iPhone?

Obviously there are people who perform the jailbreak because they want total control of your iPhone, the need to install the latest tweak in Cydia and other reasons. But each of these groups have too much self-esteem of himself. The vast majority of people always have things to jailbrekkato pirated or for unlocking your phone: anyone who denies this claim is delusional. When you look at people jailbroken iPhone, you’ll see that many apps installed on your device, and Apple is lucky if they have paid for each program.

And yes, there is also a group of people who claim to download the applications and then buy them because there is no other way to try before you buy. Personally I think Apple could solve this legitimate request by offering users the opportunity to do so.

For me it does not matter because the jailbreak is done, has no influence in my decision not to lose months of work to let people do what they want.

The May 8 came out about your book on hacking IOS: why did you feel the need to write this text?

Well, every time a field is developed and collect as much material for a specific topic, at some point, the logical consequence is to write a book.Of course nowadays you can find lots of information on the internet but these are often scattered throughout the network and sometimes, the important facts have not yet been made public. So the idea of creating a book and collect all information at one point only allows someone new in this field to make their way more easily. So in the long term, this book will allow many people to get hacking IOS quickly. However, the iDevices are an easy target to attack and therefore require years of experience to “possess”.

The problem with the “jailbreak community” at this point is that they do not understand that, in the long run, this book could bring new people into the scene of the jailbreak and most people do not understand. They believe that Apple will help to stop the jailbreak or consider it an attempt to make money from this community. This type of response shows how little they understand what is going on: first of all, anyone who writes a book about a topic of technology will tell you the few gains made (especially not if there are six authors for a book) and the other false belief is that Apple uses a couple of silly elephants who work on the safety of IOS. In fact, people who work for Apple for safety in IOS are quite skilled and have better debugging tools that our community can never have.

The reason they do not close the loophole used by the jailbreak days after a reason is purely political in nature: it seems that Apple quickly closes the loopholes that jeopardize your safety. Other than that, keep these vulnerabilities open for a while ‘because each device sold, is a device sold.Looking at the “jailbreak community” can collect information about functions that customers might want, which in the long term could lead to an increase in their earnings. I do not think Apple is so worried about piracy because of jailbrekkati devices, because they know that there is a maximum of money you can squeeze out of a person.

What do you think about the iCommunity? Do you think that is populated with users from pirated or people who, for example, will often send threatening messages?

Pirates are everywhere and I’m not interested. If you lose sleep because of them, then good luck to your survival in this world.

I think the “jailbreak community” is suffering from something far worse: it is “contaminated” by leeches who do not consider other people’s work and the effort needed to create some things. Believe they have the right to take whatever you see, and if you do not get enough tears, or “owning” the developers of the iPhone jailbreak and unlock for that they should produce in all eternity or wordlessly. You realize how delusional people are like that when you get messages such as: “Without us you are nothing, we follow you on Twitter and we’ve made it famous,” and then there are messages like, ‘Take him to follow a lesson. ”

Every time I see these posts I hope for mankind that these people are not convinced of what they say. People do not become famous because it has thousands of followers on Twitter, but it’s the other way: that is, are those people to have created something that the masses have enjoyed and gained followers. It’s up to you whether you consider yourself famous because few people know your name. I do not think it can be considered a famous until you come recognized on the street and you have to hide from the paparazzi. In any case, the amount of Twitter followers is only a concern to me, because it is directly linked to the number of people who have to manually lock.

How you deal with these people every day? That is, not everyone can tolerate such a situation for long. For example, I remember that because of this, held his geohot jailbreak iPhone OS 4.X From Twitter see at least some of your supporters for your hard work?

I do not think it has anything to do with “bear such a situation” at the beginning come irritated and can not believe the amount of anger and demands from the people but once it goes beyond the initial shock, just keep doing what want. I can understand when he held geohot jailbreak iPhone OS 4.X due to these people, because they get this type of reaction is a warning that I reallizare they are not worthy of your work, issued free of charge. In any case geohot and the Chronic Dev Team are / were also collecting donations, so they got enough to go ahead.

I also think part of this whole thing is caused by some of the jailbreak developers who write post where he said it was their intention to work day and night to release the new “change” to users. This blatant lie is the kind of statement that the crowd would love it, when in fact the work is done when there is time and mood to do it. Either way, tell people the truth will only create antipathy toward you and most likely, this would amount to less donations.

We finished with the interview! Thanks for your time: you please say something to our users?

Oh I think I said everything I wanted to say for now: I’ll wait to be inundated by the next wave of criticism.

If you managed to get through the entire interview let us know your thoughts in the comments section below…

Verizon Confirms It Will Not Be Carrying Latest HTC One Phones

If you’re a Verizon user hoping to get your hands on the latest HTC handsets, we hate to break it to you, but apparently, Verizon is skipping out on the One series. A Verizon representative told PCMag the carrier didn’t have any plans of getting the One X (or any other of phone from the One series) on their line-up.

Verizon Confirms It Will Not Be Carrying Latest HTC One Phones

This is definitely unfortunate news considering that the latest HTC device that’s hitting Verizon is the DROID Incredible 4G LTE, which frankly doesn’t even compete with the One X (or One S). It has a much smaller screen size, thicker, made of plastic, and slower processor. The HTC Rezound is also 6 months old now and doesn’t match up to the specs on the new generation of phones.

Of coarse, HTC phones will definitely still come to Verizon, but it just looks like the carrier is skipping on this series and waiting for the next. It looks like they are depending on the Galaxy S III or Motorola to do the job this time around.

What do you think? Were you planning on purchasing a new HTC phone if it came to Verizon?

How To: Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 (5.1.1) Build 9B206f Firmware On Apple TV 2G With Seas0nPass 0.8.4 [Windows]

Moments ago we told you how to Jailbreak your Apple TV 2G running the iOS 5.0.1 (5.1.1) build 9B206f firmware using the Mac OS X version of Seas0nPass 0.8.4. As we like to have both Windows and Mac OS X versions of our how to guides, in this tutorial you will learn how to Jailbreak your Apple TV 2G on iOS 5.0.1 using the Windows version of Seas0nPass 0.8.4.

Note #1: This is not the new 1080p Apple TV (Apple TV 3G) Jailbreak.

Note #2: If you are on the Mac OS X operating system please click here to follow the Mac OS X version.

Seas0nPass 0.8.4 Apple TV 2G Jailbreak

Step 1) - The first thing you are going to need to do is download the latest version of Seas0nPass for Windows from our downloads section or from the direct download link below.

Download Seas0nPass 0.8.4 for Windows (XP or later)

Step 2) - The next thing you will need to do is extract Seas0nPass (to the destination of your choice).

Step 3) – Once Seas0nPass is extracted you will need to double click the Seas0nPass.exe file.

Step 4) - When Seas0nPass has launched you will notice two options presented to you – Create IPSW and Boot Tethered.

You will need to Hold down the shift key, click the Create IPSW Button and then select the firmware version your Apple TV 2G is currently running (should be the 5.0.1 firmware). If you do not have the Apple TV 5.0.1 firmware downloaded you can simply go ahead and click the Create IPSW button and it will be downloaded automatically.

Step 5) - Seas0nPass now will begin creating your Jailbroken IPSW.

Step 6) - Once SeasonPass has created the custom IPSW you will be prompt to connect your Apple TV 2G into your computer and put it into DFU mode (follow the on-board instructions). Once your Apple TV 2G is in DFU mode Seas0nPass will automatically open iTunes and start the restore process.

Your Apple TV 2G should now be Jailbroken on the 5.0.1 firmware. Congratulations.

Booting Tethered With Seas0nPass

As this is a tethered Jailbreak you will need to boot your Apple TV 2G using Seas0nPass anytime it loses power or you need to restart it. In order to boot your Apple TV 2G tethered you will simply need to launch Seas0nPass, click the Boot Tethered Button, and finally follow the instructions for putting your Apple TV 2G into DFU mode.

Note: The Apple TV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Congrats! You have just Jailbroken your Apple TV 2G running the iOS 5.0.1 Build 9B206f (iOS 5.1.1) firmware with the Windows version of Seas0nPass 0.8.4. If you have any questions leave them in the comments.

AutoProtect Disables Your iPhone, iPad, Or iPod Touch’s Password When On Your Home’s WiFi

Do you like the idea of having a password on your iPhone but find entering the password a bit silly when it’s sitting safely inside your house? AutoProtect has a clever method of determining whether or not your phone is on your property, the idea is you set the program to your home’s WiFi Network. When your phone’s on your home WiFi, just slide to unlock. When your phone is out of range, it will ask for a password.

AutoProtect Cydia Tweak

AutoProtect’s easy enough to use, although it requires manually entering your network’s name, which can be annoying if you picked a long router name (or problematic if the name is something common like Linksys). The clever thing about AutoProtect is that it doesn’t rely on battery-guzzling services like GPS; instead it uses a service which most iPhone users have active at home anyway.

I would like to see the developers add profiles for multiple “home” networks, for people who have access to WiFi at work and other locations where an iPhone thief is not likely to remain. This would help minimize the number of needless password unlocks.

Download AutoProtect Free

AutoProtect is FREE system tweak for iOS devices. It can be found in Cydia under the ModMyi repository, and does not install a SpringBoard icon. To activate AutoProtect, go into Settings, and AutoProtect should be sorted in with the other Cydia apps,

Would AutoProtect encourage you to use a lengthier password when away from your house? Let us know in the comments section below.

Springtomize 1.3 Has A 92.1% Piracy Rate, According To Developer Filippo Bigarella

Filippo Bigarella (@FilippoBiga) posted the download stats for Springtomize 1.3 on Twitter yesterday. The developer has tracked the download stats for his apps in the past, but this time the Pirates outweigh the legitimate buyers 92.1% to a pitiful 7.9%.

Springtomize 1.3 Has A 92.1% Piracy Rate

This doesn’t necessarily represent a 92.1% loss in sales. That would imply that if the pirates were unable to install a cracked copy of Springtomize they would each buy a legitimate copy from the Cydia Store. Many of the features available in Springtomize are available in other free apps, and were available before Springtomize showed up. Just as it wouldn’t make a difference to Microsoft’s bottom line if you pirated Microsoft Office instead of installing free software like LibreOffice, installing alternative apps to Springtomize doesn’t put Filippo in a better financial position than pirating his apps would.

Piracy’s not scummy because it directly hurts Filippo, but because 92.1% of iPhone users who enjoyed Springtomize took advantage of Filippo’s work without compensating the guy. That just sucks.

Let me make this clear: I don’t support piracy. I am very much opposed to it. My parents worked as artists and entertainment professionals. So have many of their friends. I was brought up in a household where our livelyhood relied on creators having certain rights to their intellectual property.

I have special sympathy for the developers who make software on Cydia. These homebrew devs aren’t faceless, cynical corporations. They’re more often than not individuals who invest their own time, energy, and expertise into making apps. They’re not paid salaries for making these apps. Any profit they see from their work comes directly from the apps themselves.

So what can developers do to discourage piracy? Here’s my idea: if developers can track cracked versions of their software, why not include a script that detects whether the app has been cracked into the app itself (à la Earthbound’s anti-piracy scheme)? Instead of rendering the app unusable, it could merely present a message accompanied with a photograph of the developer holding a packet of Mr Noodles. It should say, “My name’s Filippo Bigarella. I designed Springtomize. I only ask .99 for my time and expertise yet 92.1% of users like you pirated this app. I’m not going to try to stop you from enjoying Springtomize, but please buy the app legally on Cydia.”

Springtomize v1.3

Staple food of the people pirates of homebrew apps take advantage of.

For this to work, it is essential that this message be benign. If the app outright attempted to thwart being cracked, it would be a cat and mouse game until the crackers managed to bypass it anyway. By leaving a harmless dialog in the app, which most crackers wouldn’t have enough skill or incentive to remove, the message can get to more people.

If you were a developer, how would you deal with iPhone piracy? Would you try to appeal to the pirate’s better nature through messages? Would you go to the source and lock out alternative repositories? How about going nuclear and doing away with jailbreaks altogether? Let us know what you think would work best in the comments section below.

(Yes, I know iJailbreak.com recently featured a story on Installous. In the interest of full disclosure: I have used the service exactly once, to snag Last.FM after it was pulled from the Canadian iTunes store. Because of Installous, I paid to subscribe to Last.FM for another year before I grew utterly bored of it. The take-home point is that software tools are only as good or bad as the intentions behind the people who use it, and I will gladly reimburse Last.FM for the sale cost of their free app.)
